February 2020 Indiana Bar Examination

Bar Exam Information

 

1. General Information

A. The exam will occur over two days, Tuesday, February 25 and Wednesday, February 26, 2020.
B. The exam will be administered at The 502 Event Center, Carmel Indiana.
C. Applicants/Examinees are to report to the exam site as follows:
     1. Tuesday, February 25 Registration-8:30 a.m., Eastern Daylight Savings Time

2. Wednesday, February 26 Check-In-8:30 a.m., Eastern Daylight Savings Time 

D. The passing score for the exam is a combined scaled score of 264. The raw scores for the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) and the Indiana Essay Exam (lEE) are scaled to the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) using standard deviation based upon the established weighting. The three tests are weighted as follows: 

1. MPT: 20%
2. lEE: 30%
3. MBE: 50%

REGISTRATION: Applicants should appear at 8:30 a.m., Eastern Daylight Savings Time on Tuesday for registration. No admission ticket will be sent prior to the exam. You must bring photo identification (i.e. driver's license or some other form of government-issued identification that contains your photograph) to be allowed into the exam. 

  

EXAMINATION SCHEDULE DETAIL

TUESDAY MORNING:

A. Registration

B. Test instructions

C. Multistate Performance Test (MPT) - 20% of exam score 

9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

 

1. The Multistate Performance Test is administered on Tuesday morning and is designed to examine fundamental lawyer skills such as problem-solving, legal analysis and reasoning, factual analysis, communications, organization and management of a legal task, and recognizing and resolving ethical dilemmas.
2. Indiana administers two MPT questions.
3. You will be given both MPT Question Booklets and Answer Booklets and have three hours to complete the session. 

TUESDAY LUNCH BREAK: 12:45 p.m. - 1 :45 p.m.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON:

A. Test Instructions 

1:45 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

 

B. Indiana Essay Examination (lEE) - 30% of exam score 

2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • 1. The Indiana Essay Examination is administered on Tuesday afternoon, lasting 4 hours.

2. The subject areas tested are:

  • Administrative law
  • Business organizations
  • Family law
  • Federal and state personal income tax, corporate tax, and estate and gift tax
  • Indiana constitutional law
  • Indiana employment law, including wage payment and wage claim statutes
  • Indiana debt collection, including garnishment, attachment, and bankruptcy exemptions
  • Residential landlord-tenant law
  • Pleading and practice, including statutes of limitation and the Indiana Tort Claims Act
  • Secured transactions
  • Wills, trusts and estates

3. Indiana does not have essays on subjects covered on the Multistate Bar Examination.
4. You will be given 6 essay questions, each in a separate book.
5. The essay questions will be unlabeled, will not necessarily be limited to one subject and, unless requiring the application of federal tax law, will call for answers based on the law of Indiana.
6. You may answer the questions in any order and may allocate the 4 hours among the questions any way you choose. 

WEDNESDAY MORNING:

A. Check-In 

8:30 a.m. - 9:10 a.m.

 

B. Test Instructions 

9:10 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

 

C. Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) - 50% of exam score 

9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

 

1. The Multistate Bar Examination consists of 200 multiple choice questions and is administered on a single day.
2. Although the questions are administered in two separate groups, each group consisting of 100 questions, all questions are combined for grading purposes and collectively the 200 questions account for 50% of your total weighted exam score.
3. Subject areas tested: (a) Constitutional Law, (b) Contracts, (c) Criminal Law & Procedure, (d) Evidence, (e) Real Property and (f) Torts (g) Civil Procedure.
4. You will be given 100 questions in each of two sessions, morning and afternoon. Instructions will be given for each session.

WEDNESDAY LUNCH BREAK: 12:40 p.m. - 1 :40 p.m.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON:

A. Test Instructions 

1:40 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

 

B. Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) 

2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

 

1. You will be given the second group of 100 MBE questions on Wednesday afternoon.
2. Instructions will be given before the afternoon testing session.
3. You must use a No.2 Pencil to answer the MBE questions and will be given pencils at the site.
